What to Wear for Beach Photos in Southern California

Outfit Ideas for Couples, Engagement Photos & Anniversary Sessions

By Sarah Ann Williams Photography

There's a reason you've probably pinned dozens of beach photos that all seem to have one thing in common, they feel effortless.

The colors are soft. Nothing competes with the landscape. The couple looks comfortable enough to laugh, run barefoot through the sand, and forget there's even a camera nearby. That feeling isn't an accident. One of the biggest factors in creating timeless beach photos isn't the location. It's what you choose to wear.

As an Oceanside couples photographer, I always encourage my couples to think less about "matching" and more about creating harmony. The beach already gives us one of the most beautiful color palettes imaginable. Your outfits should complement it, not compete with it.

1. Start with Neutral, Earthy Tones

For this winter beach session, we leaned into warm neutrals inspired by the dunes themselves.

Think:

  • Cream

  • Oatmeal

  • Sand

  • Taupe

  • Camel

  • Stone

  • Warm beige

  • Soft ivory

These tones allow the focus to stay exactly where it belongs, on your connection.

They also photograph beautifully whether we're shooting in bright sunshine or Southern California's famous marine layer.

2. Texture Photographs Better Than Patterns

One of my favorite details from this session wasn't the color palette.

It was the texture.

Instead of loud prints or logos, they wore soft knit sweaters paired with relaxed linen-inspired fabrics.

Texture creates visual depth without distracting from the people wearing it.

Some of my favorite fabrics include:

  • Linen

  • Cotton

  • Chunky knits

  • Gauze

  • Cashmere

  • Wool blends

These materials move naturally with the wind and create a timeless editorial look that won't feel dated years from now.

3. Don't dress identically

Matching outfits can sometimes flatten a photograph.

Instead, choose colors that belong in the same palette.

Notice how one partner wears a warm oatmeal sweater while the other wears a soft cream knit.

Nothing is identical.

Everything feels cohesive.

This creates dimension while still allowing the couple to feel connected.

Here are some classic palette examples which incorporate timeless colors and their complementing neutral counterparts.

4. Winter is One of the Best Times for Beach Engagement Photos

Many people assume beach sessions are best during summer.

Honestly?

Winter is one of my favorite seasons for couples photography in Southern California.

Cooler temperatures mean you can wear cozy layers without overheating.

The beaches are quieter.

The light is softer.

Marine layer skies create natural diffusion that feels cinematic and romantic.

The result is a moodier, more intimate gallery that photographs beautifully.

5. Choose Clothing You Can Move In

Your session shouldn't feel like standing still and smiling for an hour.

We'll walk.

Run.

Sit in the sand.

Lay together.

Dance.

Hold each other.

Because movement creates authentic photographs.

That's why I recommend choosing clothing you can comfortably live in, not just pose in.

Oversized sweaters, relaxed trousers, linen pants, flowing dresses, and barefoot feet all help create photographs that feel effortless.

6. Keep Accessories Minimal

Simple almost always wins.

For beach sessions, I recommend:

  • Delicate jewelry

  • Neutral shoes (or no shoes)

  • Minimal watches

  • No Apple Watches

  • No bulky purses

  • Avoid hats unless they're part of your everyday style

The less distraction, the more timeless your gallery becomes.

7. Think About Your Home

One question I always ask my couples is:

"Where do you imagine displaying these photos?"

If your home has warm woods, white walls, linen textures, and earthy tones, choosing outfits in a similar palette means your photographs become part of your home instead of simply hanging on the wall.

That's one of the reasons these neutral colors continue to feel timeless years later.
